John M. Brown III, MD
Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Morristown Medical Center
John M. Brown, MD, is the chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Morristown Medical Center. After attending medical school at Cornell University Medical College, he completed his general surgery residency and cardiac surgery fellowship at New York Hospital. Dr. Brown is board-certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. He focuses on all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including: coronary artery bypass; off pump bypass; valve repair and replacement; and aortic reconstruction; as well as adult thoracic surgery, including lung and esophageal surgery. Dr. Brown specializes in minimally invasive valve surgery. Many of these are complex mitral valve repairs.
An internship with an urologist in Boston one summer inspired Dr. Brown's pursuit of a medical degree. "I had always been interested in science, but I did not realize how positive an impact good medical care can have on a patient and his family, and I found that very rewarding. In light of my background in sports, cardiac surgery seemed like a natural choice-it really is about a team working together to meet one goal."
In addition to performing cardiac surgery, Dr. Brown is also the founder and director of Atlantic Health System's innovative Cardiac Classroom, an award-winning distance learning program for high school students launched with the Liberty Science Center. "Everyone is at risk for heart disease. Through the Cardiac Classroom we can teach young people good health habits before they learn bad ones, which are so much harder to change down the road," Dr. Brown explains. "Hopefully, by providing a real look inside an operating room, we can also stimulate their interest in medicine and expose them to exciting career possibilities."
Dr. Brown has been ranked among the Best Doctors in America (Best Doctors, Inc.), New Jersey's Top Doctors (New Jersey Monthly Magazine), New York's Top Doctors (American Registry), and Who's Who in the East (Marquis Who's Who Publication Board). He is a past recipient of the Award for Innovation for the Cardiac Classroom from the Association of Science and Technology Centers.
