“My mom is special because she has a unique heart” – Gabriel Chacon Jr., son of Heart Ball Survivor, Mayra.
(Mayra, Gabriel Jr., and Gabriel Sr.)
Gabriel, Jr. was only six months old when his mom had major complications from living with heart failure. Mayra was in the hospital for two months fighting for her life before receiving an LVAD, which is a battery-operated, mechanical pump-type device that's surgically implanted. It helps maintain the pumping ability of a heart that can't effectively work on its own.
Gabriel has never known his mom without this device helping to keep her alive. When Gabriel was in first grade, he drew the picture in the photo above. Just like any other first grader, he drew his dad, himself and his mom… and her LVAD. Despite these challenges, Mayra and her family live a full life. We look forward to sharing more of Mayra’s story at the 2018 Affair of the Heart Ball!
