Susan Summers of Chatham, NJ, thought that March 17, 2008, would be just another ordinary day.
But March 17th wasn’t an ordinary day for Susan.
Susann suffered an ischemic stroke while she was home with her two small children
She was 39 years old at the time.
Over the next month, Susan suffered two more strokes, including a hemorrhagic stroke that required a craniectomy to relieve the pressure on her brain.
After an amazing recovery, Susan is doing well and back to her full time job as the mother of two active and healthy children. She makes sure to follow up with her doctors, take medication and stays healthy by eating right and exercising.
Susan is a Go Red For Women Survivor Ambassador shares her story in hopes to help bring awareness that heart disease and stroke can happen to anyone—at anytime.
Heart disease remains the number 1 killer of women while stroke remains the no. 3 leading cause of death of women. In fact, more women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined. But with your help, all this can be largely preventable.
Open Your Heart for a healthy future
Open Your Heart is an opportunity in the Go Red for Women luncheon where you can speak up by making a lifesaving donation. Chances are you know a woman, man or child who has suffered from heart disease. Your donation honors these survivors, but also those who did not. Make a difference with a donation to fund the programs and research that will make a healthy future for women a reality. Together we can conquer heart disease. Contact your local Go Red for Women luncheon director. Or click the button. Or attend your Luncheon, and give as your heart speaks to you.
A woman at your table will have a "heart" story. Someone in your row at the breakout session will have found a way to eat baked, not fried, for her whole family. That exercise and diet plan you've been looking for, the one that is actually doable? The woman next to you in line for coffee is going to tell you to forget diets, and become a BetterU.
Together the women of Go Red can bring a voice to this silent killer to help save lives. We can listen to what our hearts are telling us, talk to our doctors, and spread the word to our friends and community about making the right choices and taking action.
Go Red For Women needs you to shatter the silence by choosing to Speak Up about heart disease. Be part of the movement, make choices, speak up and spread the word. By sharing this commitment with Go Red For Women, together we can help save lives. Be a part of this extraordinary day.
Our Hearts. Our Choice.
